Aren today explains what Tux Math is all about. Funny thing is, he manages to find his way around simple sums, though he’s not yet learning arithmetic of that kind in school. Blame it on trial-and-error, and the fun spirit that games bring in. Of course, this is Free Software!

Indian software czar Azim Premji has diverted some of his (and his team’s) energies into creating “not for sale” educational resources for children. As one goes about telling others about the potential of the software from azimpremjifoundation.org, five-year-old Aren is a willing accomplice in making the point. It’s fun to use (and, at zero-price, easy to access). Wish more could use it! But it really needs to reach schools catering to the under-priviledged, so that the social role of such software could be met.

Kurtis Heimerl [Ph.D. Candidate, EECS, UC Berkeley] Abstract: Enabling computer-based education in the developing world requires addressing significant resource limitations. Students often sit with two or more peers at a computer, and learning in this environment can be a challenge. For this reason, the idea of multiple-mouse interfaces has gained traction, allowing each student to directly interact with educational applications. However, major roadblocks exist to adoption and use of these technologies. First, although there are vast libraries of existing educational software, almost none of this software is designed to support multiple mice. Second, the basic principles for encouraging sharing and collaboration with multiple children using multiple mice are still not well understood. To combat this problem, we have designed Metamouse. In this talk, we describe the Metamouse motivations and interaction techniques in detail. We also compare the different Metamouse techniques, establishing the trade-offs inherent in their use.
